Luigi’s Mansion 3 is a better game than most would have expected, with a meaty campaign that constantly delivers some excellent level design, incredible atmosphere, and some memorable boss fights. Soon, fans of the game will be treated to more multiplayer content for the game, with two DLCs due out this year, but developers Next Level Games were originally thinking of adding even more single player content to the game with post-launch expansions.

Speaking to Kotaku, creative director Bryce Holliday said that in the beginning phases of development, Next Level Games were considering making single player expansions, but that it was an idea that “faded quickly.” Due to the fact that it would take more time, and that the studio also wanted to work on multiplayer content that was initially being cut from the base game, they decided to go with multiplayer expansions instead.

“In the very beginning, there was an urge from NLG to do a single-player expansion, but it faded quickly,” Holliday said. “[We] had a lot of multiplayer ideas that would be fun to develop and share with fans that were getting cut. Making story mode games is a difficult and slower process, development-wise, than multiplayer modes, so we ended up pushing them to DLC.”

Holliday also feels not working on single player DLC allows the studio to save some of its ideas “for something else in the future.”

“Multiplayer DLC development will be a fresh break for NLG and forces some exercise of our ‘Multiplayer brains,'” he said. “An additional benefit is that the cut single-player ideas can be saved for something else in the future.”

Luigi’s Mansion 3 is out now on the Switch. It’s been selling very well, outpacing the sales of its predecessor 2:1. Read our review of the game through here.
