Given that Square Enix have chosen to remake Final Fantasy 7 over multiple instalments, each of which is going to be a full-length game, we always knew that they’d be making quite a few changes to the story- and they’ve certainly done so. Even though Final Fantasy 7 Remake only covers the Midgar section of the original game – which was essentially just 5-6 hours – there’s still a lot of narrative additions, changes, and expansions to speak of. Here, we’re going to talk about 15 such changes.

This should go without saying, but there are major spoilers ahead for Final Fantasy 7 Remake, so if you haven’t finished it, turn back now.

So let’s kick things off, and let’s begin with a relatively smaller one.

NIBELHEIM FLASHBACK

Throughout Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Cloud – much like in the original – keeps having sudden flashes of headaches. Early on in the game, before he meets Aerith, Cloud starts hallucinating and seeing Sephiroth – something that happens quite a lot throughout the game – and these hallucinations trigger a flashback. Cloud briefly remembers Sephiroth’s attack on Nibelheim, and though this is, of course, not a new story element by any stretch of the imagination, the stuff about Nibelheim in the original FF7 didn’t come into play until much later in the story.
