Call Of Duty: Warzone To ‘Connect’ All The Different Series Brands In The Future

The game will serve as a through-line to the various sub-series.

Call of Duty Warzone

While Call of Duty: Warzone is not the first time the franchise has dabbled in the battle royale genre (that honor belongs to the Blackout mode in Black Ops 4), it’s the first time it has been its own distinct service. Despite being loosely connected to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, it can be downloaded and played separately. With Call of Duty being an annual series, what about the future of Warzone? Well, it seems Activision has ambitious plans.

We already know that the game is planned for next generation consoles, but according to Narrative Director Taylor Kurosaki in an interview with GamerGen, the plans are more broad than that. He says Warzone will be a connecting title to the various different sub-series and brands the franchise has. It’s not clear exactly what he means, but he seems to imply that the free to play title will implement aspects of the yearly title in some form or fashion.

“We’re in kind of uncharted territories here,” he said. “Call of Duty has been on a very regular cadence for many, many years, and Warzone has made us rethink exactly how best to release new content and how to integrate it.

Call of Duty is a genre in itself. There are different branches in the Call of Duty tree, but they’re all connected in some ways.

Warzone will be the through-line that connects all of the different various sub-franchises of Call of Duty. It’s going to be really cool to see how the different sub-franchises sort of come in and out of focus, but Warzone will be the one constant.”

The next game in the franchise is, of course, slated to come this year and rumors have it possibly being set in Vietnam with loose connections to the Black Ops brand. We’ll get to see exactly what they have mind, most likely, when that launches near the end of the year.
