GhostWire: Tokyo Is “The Longest I’ve Taken on Any Game” – Shinji Mikami

The game was in pre-production for "a few years."

Yes, we all want Tango Gameworks to make The Evil Within 3, but regardless of whether or not that happens, there’s other stuff going on at the talented horror studio. They unveiled GhostWire: Tokyo at E3 2019, and though we haven’t seen or heard much of the game since then, the studio is still hard at work on it.

In fact, speaking recently with IGN, studio chief Shinji Mikami talked about the very same. He explained that GhostWire: Tokyo was actually in pre-production for a few years based on an idea for the game that creative director Ikumi Nakamura – who left Tango last year – had had. After working on the idea with a small team for a while, the game entered full production.

“The initial team started with about five people and we worked on it for six months,” Mikami said. “We then expanded to 10 people and we worked on it for a few years before we went into full production.” Mikami himself joined the game’s development team as executive producer to provide assistance at the beginning of 2019.

Mikami went on to remark on the game’s long development cycle, commenting that he hasn’t worked on any single project as long as he has worked on GhostWire: Tokyo. “This is probably the longest I’ve taken on any game I’ve made in the past,” he said.

GhostWire: Tokyo’s announcement at E3 2019 was the only time we’ve seen the game (or at least a rough cinematic representation of the game). Bethesda were primed to share more on the horror title at E3 this year. That was before E3 2020 got cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with Bethesda stating shortly afterward that they had no plans for a replacement digital event.
