The NPD charts for video game software and hardware sales in the United States for the month of May have come in (via GamesBeat), and as has been the trend for the last few months, due to lockdown restrictions, people continue to turn to video games for entertainment, leading to massive sales.

Software sales raked in $438 million over the course of the month, which is a 67 per cent year-on-year growth, while year-to-date software spending climbed to $2.5 billion, which is 13 per cent up from last year at this time. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare topped the charts, and reclaims its spot as the best-selling game of the year. Perennial sellers Grand Theft Auto 5 and Animal Crossing: New Horizons follow close behind.

On the hardware front, the Nintendo Switch is, once again, the best performing. It’s the best-selling system for May in terms of both unit and dollar sales. Additionally, this is also the best month of May any system has seen performance-wise since the Nintendo DS’ performance in May 2009.

In total, hardware spending in May hit $235 million, up 56 per cent from last year. This, incidentally, is the highest total for a month of May since 2010, which is impressive considering that the majority of active consoles on the market are very close to the end of their lives (though frankly, the Switch has driven most of this revenue). Year-to-date hardware spending stands at $1.4 billion, which is a 34 per cent year-on-year growth.
