2K Games Defends NBA 2K21 Price Hike: ‘It Represents Value Being Presented’

The next generation versions are a little costlier this time.

NBA 2K21 current gen 2

The season for digital sports is upon us with companies like EA and 2K Games bringing out their usual annual titles. Yesterday, some people got a bit of a shock when NBA 2K21‘s release schedule the next generation console versions, the PS5 and Xbox Series X ones, were more expensive than usual. To be specific on the USD side it went for $70 instead of what has become the standard $60 (as well as the European price seeing a similar hike). Well, 2K Games thinks it’s worth the price.

As reported by Wccftech, when asked about the price hike, 2K issued a statement basically saying they see the price for the next generation versions as justified due to the new additions and improvements only possible on those systems.

“2K’s suggested retail prices for its games are meant to represent the value being offered. With nearly endless replay value and many new additions and improvements only possible on next-generation consoles, we believe our updated suggested retail price fairly represents the value of NBA 2K21.”

In America, MSRP on video games has been $60 since 2005 when that price point launched alongside games for the Xbox 360 and has since been the standard for a typical non-special edition new release, barring instances of budget titles, remasters, and the like. Other regions have been different, however, with games steadily going up in price. It’s not clear at this point if 2K is alone in this, as no other company has announced prices for the PS5 and Series X releases of their games.

NBA 2K21 launches on September 4th for all major platforms. While the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions will be $69.99 USD, all other versions, which includes the PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, and Stadia, will stay at the standard $59.99 in the States.
