We’re in full swing for the next generation console marketing cycle, and there’s been praise for both Sony’s PS5 as well as Microsoft’s Xbox Series X for various things. One company that’s been very high on the PS5, however, has been Epic Games, using the system to demo their next major engine, Unreal Engine 5. Yesterday, we got word that Sony had invested $250 million into Epic Games and, as you’d imagine, a lot of cynics looked at that with a raised eyebrow. But the CEO of Epic Games denies it had anything to do with previous praise.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, who has spoken about the PS5 tech in some glowing terms, responded to a question on Twitter and basically denied that the investment had any major impact on what has been said or that the system was used to highlight UE5. He states that no serious discussions began until after the demo, in fact, and that everything they’d been working on with Sony has been publicly announced.

Those who still doubt will not be quelled I imagine, but considering the publicity that UE5 tech demo garnered, it wouldn’t be too surprising at all if Sony was impressed enough to invest in the company. In the end, it doesn’t matter a lot one way or another, because it’s a done deal at this point.
