Rocksteady have been dead silent about their next project for a long time now, and with Batman: Arkham Knight now being over five years old, the wait for the British studio’s next game has become increasingly unbearable as time has gone by. Well, we’re still going to have to keep waiting for a couple more years, but at least now we know that they’re working on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
There’s plenty yet that we don’t know about the game – we haven’t even seen any gameplay yet, with its reveal trailer having been a CG one – but there are some details that creative director and Rocksteady boss Sefton Hill revealed during the DC FanDome panel where the game was unveiled. One of those details is the fact that the game is going to be set in the same universe as the Arkham series, and following up on Arkham Knight, will continue and resolve several of its narrative threads.
“This is a continuation of the Arkhamverse, so a lot of the threads and storylines you’re going to see come to fruition in this game,” Hill said.
The implications of that are going to be interesting. With the titular Suicide Squad clearly going up against the also titular Justice League, and with the latter’s leader Superman having – for whatever reason – gone rogue, how that Batman ties into all of that, especially given how Arkham Knight ended, will be interesting to see.
Meanwhile, WB Games Montreal’s Gotham Knights was also recently announced, and though its trailer (and the aforementioned Arkham Knight’s ending) might have given the impression that it is also set in the Arkhamverse, the developers have confirmed that that isn’t the case.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will release for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC in 2022.
Rocksteady have recently been at the center of a controversy, with allegations of harassment from employees recently emerging, leading to a former writer on the game asking for her name to be taken off its credits. Rocksteady have since responded to those allegations- you can read more on that through here.
