It’s been a big year for Sony with the launch of the PS5. The new generation console has apparently sold out everything and everywhere at this point, which is always a good thing I suppose, and managed to do so in the midst of one of the worst pandemics in 100 years. Naturally, that means this year was focused on that machine and getting it out the door, but there’s a lot more to the PlayStation brand, and apparently “interesting” stuff is still on the way.

In an extensive interview with GQ, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan admitted that pretty much all the focus this year was on the PS5. Because of that, he foresees the next 5-7 years of the machine being a success. He does acknowledge there’s other things there, specifically Plus, the monthly subscription service tied to the ecosystem’s online gaming, and Now, the streaming service Sony launched. While he didn’t get into specifics, he did say now that the PS5 is out, there’s things to look forward to elsewhere and they will get their time in the sun.

“PS Now and Plus are very important to us today. This year we’re just trying to keep it focused on the PlayStation 5 and the games, but that doesn’t mean we’re thinking deeply about our services and figuring out some quite interesting stuff that’ll get its own moment in the limelight.”

There’s not a lot there obviously, but it does seem as if those services have stayed pretty much status quo in recent years, which may or may not be a bad thing depending on how you feel about them. What “interesting stuff” will put these services in the spotlight in the future? Only time will tell.
