PS5 Update For Enabling SSD Storage Expansion Reportedly Being Planned For Summer

The update also will address the cooling fan alongside the new feature.

Sony launched their PS5, and by just about any metric the system has been a rousing success for the company. But one sticking point for it, and Microsoft’s consoles as well, is that games are getting bigger than ever. The PS5, both disc and digital versions, come with 825 GB of storage in total, and even less when you consider the OS and software updates present on the system. Well, relief may be coming soon.

In a report from Bloomberg‘s Japanese division, Sony is reportedly planning a firmwire update that will allow storage expansion options. While you can use external HDD storage now, it is only enabled for PS4 titles, and there is no ability to do the same with SSD expansion at all. Sony has said that support is coming, but hasn’t said anything official as of now. According to this report, the firmware update would also improve the speed of the fan to accommodate any expansions (thanks to Wccftech for translations and transcribing).

The PlayStation 5 is technically available now, though still suffers stock shortages, which are expected to last through most of 2021. If the report is accurate, the storage update should come sometime this summer.
