Cyberpunk 2077 is “Closer” to Returning to PlayStation Store, but the Final Decision is Sony’s – CDPR

Cyberpunk 2077’s launch proved to be a disastrous one, and especially on consoles, the game launched in a state that was far from acceptable. On PS4 (and to a lesser extent, on PS5 via backward compatibility), the game suffered from crippling issues, resulting in severe consequences for CD Projekt RED. On top of lawsuits, refunds, and post-launch reports about troubled development, Cyberpunk 2077 was also taken completely off PlayStation Store in an unprecedented move.

It’s now been over a hundred days since Cyberpunk 2077 was taken off the PlayStation Store, but with CD Projekt RED having started the process of fixing the game – most recently with patch 1.2, which has a massive list of fixes – many are wondering when the game will be available for sale on the digital PlayStation storefront again. Speaking about the same at a recent investor Q&A, CD Projekt’s SVP of business development Michał Nowakowski said that though the game is closer to that stage, the final decision rests with Sony.

“Regarding this process, we have published several patches, we have just published a really big one yesterday, and we have published several hotfixes, and each and every one of them brings us closer to going back to the PSN store,” Nowakowski said. “However, the final decision you have to understand belongs to Sony. We do believe we’re closer than further, but of course the final call is theirs, so let’s wait and see.”

Nowakowski also spoke about the game’s sales, stating that in addition to updates and patches for improving the game, the RPG’s sales should also see a positive impact whenever it returns to PlayStation Store- even on non-PlayStation platforms.

“As far as Cyberpunk sales for this year are concerned, first of all I believe they will be driven by two major elements that we keep working on,” he said. “First, patching and updating the game, and this should also result in coming back to the Sony store. Obviously, Sony’s decision is much awaited by many gamers and we believe it may also influence purchasing decisions of not only those playing on PlayStation but also on other platforms, so this is important to us.”

Within less than a week of launch, Cyberpunk 2077 had sold over 13 million copies worldwide, even factoring for refunds. Over 10 million digital units were sold across December.

CD Projekt has made several key announcements recently. Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer project seems to have been cancelled, with CDPR reconsidering its approach to online content. The developer has also said that going forward, in response to backlash against Cyberpunk 2077, it will be changing its marketing strategies for games. Meanwhile, a potential leak of upcoming free DLC may also have revealed some new details about new features that could be added to the game. Read more on that through here.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. It will be releasing for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S later this year.
