Following numerous delays, Amazon Game Studios’ New World is set to release on August 31st for PC. It’s currently in alpha testing and there have already been concerns about its in-game storefront, especially when it comes to pay-to-win elements. On Twitter, studio director Rich Lawrence has sought to clarify the storefront’s current and future purposes.

Lawrence stated that, “All store items at launch will be exclusively cosmetic in nature.” The storefront’s introduction in the alpha is intended to test the value of different items along with seeking feedback from players. That being said, there are plans to add items like fast travel and rested XP (the latter providing an XP boost for players). Currently, the timing of these items being released will “depend on how players progress in the months after launch.” It also noted that both items would be obtainable in-game for players to earn.

“Our goal with all items of any type is that they not offer an advantage that imbalances the game. We understand that this line is based on player interpretation, so we ask for your patience while we test in Alpha and listen to your feedback.” Lawrence also confirmed plans for a Battle Pass-style program that would “combine store items on a periodic basis” though nothing has been set in stone. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.
