Development is moving along for Blizzard’s Diablo 2: Resurrected with an early access beta going live this weekend for pre-purchasers (and August 20th for everyone else). The developer has answered a number of other queries in the same announcement post but neglected to mention the status of seasons or competitive ladder play. Global community development lead Adam Fletcher was asked about the same in a Reddit post.
Will there be seasons/ladder at launch? According to Fletcher, “We will have some more information on seasons/ladder. I would expect it wouldn’t be right at launch for the start of one and more so around a different time that we specify after launch.” While this may not seem like a huge deal – and may be a way to alleviate servers being overloaded – hardcore fans will no doubt have flashbacks to the lack of ladders in Warcraft 3: Reforged (which are still missing).
While it’s unlikely that Diablo 2: Resurrected won’t take nearly as long to implement the two features, especially considering how essential seasons are to the hack and slash looter experience, it’s still a bummer for fans that expected it. More details on a start time could still be revealed in the coming weeks so stay tuned. The title is currently slated to release on September 23rd for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch.
