“Improving the Capture and Share Experience is Definitely a Priority for us,” Says Xbox Exec

"It’s definitely an area that I wish were able to make more progress this year than we did but it will definitely be a priority for 2022," says Xbox's Jason Ronald.

Microsoft has made excellent strides with its gaming hardware in recent years, and that goes beyond just the impressive capabilities of the Xbox Series X/S. Where usability and features are concerned, things such as Quick Resume, FPS Boost, backward compatibility, and Smart Delivery have combined to improve the Xbox experience significantly- but one area where Xbox is still lagging behind its competition is gameplay capture and sharing.

Speaking as a guest in the recent Iron Lords podcast though, Xbox’s director of program management Jason Ronald said that Xbox Game DVR is an area that Microsoft has had its eye on for some time, and though they didn’t make as many improvements to that capture and sharing experience in 2021 as they would have wanted to, that is something the Xbox team is focusing on and is prioritizing in the immediate future.

“I will definitely say that Game DVR is the one area – the capture and share experience – that I wish we were able to make more progress [on] this year than we were able to,” Ronald said (transcribed by VGC). “It is definitely a priority for us. We definitely hear the feedback. We have made some changes and we have made some improvements to the reliability and the quality of the captures but we know we still have work to do here. So that is definitely a priority for us and something that we’re going to continue to iterate on.”

Ronald went on to suggest that if things go to plan, 2022 will be the year where we see meaningful improvements for the Xbox Game DVR experience. He said: “Definitely, message heard, and like I said, it’s definitely an area that I wish were able to make more progress this year than we did but it will definitely be a priority for 2022.”

This is not, of course, the first time that Ronald has talked about Xbox capture and sharing and the improvements that Microsoft wants to make to that side of the Xbox experience. In early 2021, Ronald said that Microsoft is working on “a number of improvements to the capture and share experience” on Xbox consoles, and that it is “a priority for the team.” Read more on that through here.

Meanwhile, on the same podcast, Ronald also talked about adding an Xbox Achievements equivalent of PlayStation’s Platinum Trophies- read more on that through here.
