Earlier, it was reported that Microsoft was planning to devise a system for placing in-game ads in free-to-play games on Xbox. Now, according to a recent report from Business Insider, it seems that Sony is also trying to devise a similar system for its PlayStation platforms.

As revealed in the report, Sony aims to incentivize developers to pursue free-to-play experiences on PlayStation through this move. It isn’t currently known whether Sony will be taking a cut of ad-generated revenue, but it is believed that it will be exchanging consumer data with partners. Viewing ads could also net players virtual currency that could be then cashed in for buying in-game items like avatars and skins.

According to the report, Sony is already testing a program that would allow developers to place in-game ads, and a formal introduction of this program will reportedly be taking place sometime later this year.

Sony also recently announced the long-rumored Sony Spartacus program in an official capacity, which will take the form of a revamped PlayStation Plus- read more on that through here.
