It’s been a couple of years since Sabotage Studio announced Sea of Starsa retro turn-based RPG set in the same universe as its previous game, sidescrolling Metroidvania title The Messenger, and in the time since then, it has generated plenty of buzz and anticipation, especially with each new showing looking quite promising. The wait for the, however, is going to be a little longer than previously expected.

Last year, Sabotage Studio confirmed that Sea of Stars was targeting a Holiday 2022 launch, but the developer has now announced a delay. Taking to Twitter, it announced that Sea of Stars will now launch sometime in 2023- though Sabotage is still looking into releasing a “playable slice” of the game in 2022.

“Keeping in mind our two main priorities – quality of life for our team and quality of the finished game – we can now confirm that Sea of Stars will be released in 2023,” the developer wrote. “We understand waiting is a big ask, and want to sincerely thank our community for the overwhelming support and positive vibes. In the meantime, we are looking at options to get a playable slice out to everyone this year.”

There’s no word on what form this playable slice will take, or if it is guaranteed to happen. It would be a nice bonus if it does, of course, but it goes without saying that the primary focus for the developer is obviously going to be on finishing up the game itself.

Sea of Stars is, so far, announced for PC and Nintendo Switch.
