When it comes to Resident Evil remakes, Capcom never shies away from expanding on the source material with not only additional content, but also changes and additions to the gameplay with new systems and mechanics, and it’s clear that it’s going to do the same with the upcoming Resident Evil 4 remake. The new knife parry mechanic is, of course, one pretty major addition, but as you’d expect, it’s far from the only one.

Speaking recently to Game Informer, the remake’s co-directors Yasuhiro Ampo and Kazunori Kadoi explained that they wanted the game to offer plenty of replay value and provided more options to players to inject more variety into the gameplay. As pr Ampo, though the original did boast some of that variety when it came to combat, for other aspects of the experience, options were limited.

“Within the confines of fighting, the combat is really well done, and the choices you have when fighting are rather varied,” he said. “But outside of that, we felt there wasn’t a lot of choice and thought there was room for updates there.”

This led to the inclusion of stealth mechanics, which we’ve seen a little bit of in the gameplay that Capcom has showcased over the last several months, including Leon being able to crouch and sneak up to enemies and silently dispatch them. Another new tool that contributes to the stealth is the bolt thrower, a silent and deadly weapon, while “other new specialized weapons” – that Capcom is choosing not to talk about – will be present in the game as well.

On top of that, outside of the combat, players can also look forward to “new paths” that will let them “explore in different ways”.

Resident Evil 4 launches on March 24 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PC.
