Last year, Square Enix announced Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the second and penultimate instalment in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake saga, and confirmed that it would be out sometime during the coming Winter, but with Final Fantasy 16 launching in three weeks’ time, it’s understandable that that’s what’s mostly been on series fans’ minds. Behind the scenes, meanwhile, development on the remake sequel is continuing to move along nicely as well.

The same was confirmed in a development update recently provided by producer Yoshinori Kitase via the game’s official Twitter account, who also said that Square Enix is currently in the process of determining a specific release date for the game.

“Development is progressing smoothly and according to plan,” Kitase said. “We are currently working on nailing down a release date for the game.”

Kitase has said similar things of the RPG’s development over the last few months, having remarked shortly after the game’s announcement last year that production was moving at “an astonishingly fast pace”, and said earlier this year that development was continuing to “accelerate”.

Concrete details on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth have been scant, though its developers have shared a few tidbits here and there of what players can expect. Lead battle programmer Satoru Koyama has said that he hopes to implement a combat system that will surpass Final Fantasy 12’s Gambit System, while Kitase has also said that, thanks to the PS5’s SSD, the game is set to have a “vast” world. It’s also been teased that Zack Fair, a crucial character in the original game, will have an “active” role in the upcoming game.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is in development exclusively for PS5. Meanwhile, work is also already underway on the remake trilogy’s final instalment.
