Larian Studios has established itself as one of the leading RPG developers in the industry over the course of the last decade or so, having delivered two back-to-back incredible experiences in Divinity: Original Sin and its sequel. Both games were critical and commercial successes for Belgian developer, which naturally means there’s no shortage of excitement around its upcoming role-playing behemoth Baldur’s Gate 3– which, it seems, is on track to be even more successful than the studio’s past outings.
Speaking recently in an interview with Eurogamer, Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke revealed that Baldur’s Gate 3 has been “vastly” more successful in its early acces period than Divinity: Original Sin 2 was. Though Vincke did not provide specific sales numbers, he did say that Baldur’s Gate 3’s early access sales are about five times higher than what Divinity: Original Sin 2 managed in its own early access period.
“It’s vastly more successful than DOS2. You can’t compare it,” he said. “I think it’s five-times in early access, if not more. I don’t know the numbers by heart – it sounds crazy but it’s true. But it’s much, much, much more successful than DOS2 was in early access. But that’s normal because a lot of people now trust the company, trust the type of gameplay that we bring, so they converted early on.”
Baldur’s Gate 3 has been available on PC in early access for nearly three years, since October 2020. Though Larian hasn’t provided any sales figures since then, shortly after the game’s early access launch, Vincke said initial sales for the RPG were “insane”.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is set to launch in full for PC on August 3, with a PS5 launch following on September 6. Larian is currently also working on Xbox Series X/S versions, and though the studio is struggling to get splitscreen properly optimzied for the weaker hardware of the Xbox Series S, it says the feature is a “must” for the game. Larian is hoping for an Xbox Series X/S launch sometime in 2023, though a release date hasn’t yet been formally announced.
