Nintendo’s newest Mario title, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, is out later this month. It’s noteworthy as the first side-scrolling platformer in the franchise since New Super Mario Bros. U launched in 2012. The art style has some similarities but is a definite step up from the Wii U franchise.
Game Informer spoke to producer Takashi Tezuka, who feels the team has transitioned “from the New Super Mario Bros. series into a new phase” but has “no idea what the next game style will be.” Art director Masanobu Sato added, “However, what we do know is that Super Mario Bros. Wonder has set a bigger stage for adventure for Mario and friends.”
It’s hard to predict at this stage – after all, who thought that Nintendo would make a side-scroller, especially after Super Mario Odyssey? Nevertheless, with rumors of the next Nintendo Switch circulating, including two SKUs and a potential release next year in September/November, it should be interesting to see the next major leap in the series’ art style.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder launches on October 20th for Nintendo Switch. Check out our feature for everything you should know before picking it up. You can also watch the latest overview trailer here.
