Larian is Planning a “Very Big RPG” to “Dwarf” Baldur’s Gate 3, but Doesn’t Have the Tech to Build it Yet

"I don't know what the specs are on the next gen [of gaming systems] yet, but I hope that it's going to bring us closer," says CEO Swen Vincke.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a mind-bogglingly massive game in more ways than one, but developer Larian Studios’ sights are already set on a project that it believes is going to dwarf even the mega-successful 2023 RPG.

Speaking in an interview with GameSpot, Larian Studios CEO and Baldur’s Gate 3 director Swen Vincke recently revealed that the developer is planning a “very big RPG” that will “dwarf” all of Larian’s past titles. It is not, however, going to be the studio’s next game, because apparently the technology to bring that vision to life doesn’t yet exist. Vincke hopes, however, that the next generation of gaming hardware will get closer to that level.

“I think there is some tech that we don’t have yet,” Vincke said. “And I don’t know what the specs are on the next gen [of gaming systems] yet, but I hope that it’s going to bring us closer.”

As for what it is that Larian Studios is going to do next, while there isn’t too much clarity on that front, we do know what the developer’s next game won’t be. Larian has said it’s moving away from the Dungeons and Dragons license, which means it’s working on neither Baldur’s Gate 4 nor DLC for Baldur’s Gate 3. Meanwhile, though Larian intends to eventually develop Divinity: Original Sin 3, it doesn’t look like that’s going to be the studio’s next project.

Whatever it is that Larian works on next, it’s probably going to be a while before we hear concrete details about it- so hold fast.
