Borderlands 4 may not have been formally unveiled yet, but there’s little doubt in anyone’s mind that a new instalment in the highly successful franchise is indeed in development at Gearbox Entertainment. That, incidentally, has now been confirmed by the studio’s new parent company.

It was recently announced that Embracer Group has sold Gearbox Entertainment (along with the rights to a number of the studio’s IP, including Borderlands) to Take-Two Interactive. In the aftermath, in a press release announcing the acquisition, longtime Borderlands publisher 2K – the Take-Two label under which Gearbox will operate – has confirmed that the looter shooter series’ next instalment is in the works.

“We have loved partnering with Gearbox on every iteration of the Borderlands franchise and are excited to be in active development on the next installment in the series,” said 2K president David Ismailer.

In November last year, it was reported that both Borderlands 4 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2 had been mentioned on a former Gearbox Entertainment employee’s LinkedIn page. Meanwhile, earlier this month, it was reported that the former’s development team had seen leadership shake-ups, while the latter had received a “soft reboot” in production.

Earlier this year, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford also labelled the next Borderlands game as “the greatest thing we’ve ever done.”
