There were plenty of surprising announcements during Sony’s recent State of Play, including Omega Force’s Dynasty Warriors: Origins. Based on the gameplay trailer, it’s a return to the series’ traditional hack-and-slash gameplay after the underwhelming open world of Dynasty Warriors 9.

Producer and studio head Tomohiko Sho confirmed this in a new PlayStation Blog while promising “the largest armies ever seen in the series.” The team is “making the most” of the PS5’s specs (though a press release confirmed PC and Xbox Series X/S versions as well), which means “massive armies as far as the eye can see.”

Though you can go one vs. 1000 like in previous titles, coordinating with allies is also necessary. Sho also confirmed that the “nameless hero” who serves as the protagonist will be the first original hero in the franchise. They’ll venture through the chaotic Three Kingdoms era and leave their mark (though expect the famous generals and soldiers as well).

Dynasty Warriors: Origins releases in 2025, with Omega Force promising more details in the “coming months” about the new protagonist. Stay tuned in the meantime.
