Nintendo Switch 2 Will Bring Back Feature That Uses HD Rumble to Find Lost Controllers

With the Switch 2 Nintendo will be bringing back a more powerful version of a feature we last saw on the original Switch – the ability to find a lost controller that might still be within connection range. Spotted by social media platform X user Stealth40k, the feature is available through the console’s controllers screen, and allows users to make the controller vibrate loudly enough to make audible sounds.

Switch 2 users can enter the Controllers section on the home screen, where they will be able to pick the Search for Controllers option. In this new screen, players can simply select a control they want found and hit a button, prompting the console to try and connect to it. If it succeeds, the selected controller will start using its HD Rumble hardware to make a distinct sound – a deep buzz followed by two higher pitched buzzes.

It is worth noting that neither the Switch 2 Pro Controller nor the JoyCon 2 controllers have built-in speakers. Rather, the sound will be made entirely by making the controllers vibrate at high enough frequencies to be audible. As such, the feature also won’t work on controllers that don’t feature hardware that would allow for vibration.

The original Switch also had this feature, where a user could find their missing controller by making it buzz loudly through HD Rumble. However, since the Switch 2’s controllers have more powerful rumble thanks to upgraded hardware, the sound made on the newer controllers will likely end up being much louder.

Nintendo is currently getting ready to launch the Switch 2 in just a few weeks – on June 5. The company revealed during its recent earnings report that it expects to sell around 15 million units of the new console over the coming year. This forecast, according to Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, was made by looking at the first year sales of the original Switch.

“We’ve set projected sales for the Nintendo Switch 2 in the ongoing fiscal year at 15 million units,” said Furukawa. “This figure is based on a target comparable to sales of the original Nintendo Switch during the 10-month period from its launch in March 2017 to the end of December the same year.”

Furukawa also mentioned that the price of the Switch 2 might change in the future, depending on the situation with the US tariffs on imported goods. “At this time, the top priority is to quickly popularize the Switch 2 hardware,” he explained. “If the assumptions regarding tariffs change significantly, we would like to consider what price adjustments we should make and implement them after considering various factors.”

The Nintendo president had also mentioned that sales forecasts for the Switch 2 were relatively conservative, owing to the fact that the console is priced at a higher point than the original Switch. This, believes Furukawa, might create obstacles when it comes to the console’s wider adoption. “Since the Switch 2 is priced higher than the original Switch, we recognize that there will be considerable hurdles in achieving the console’s widespread adoption in the early stages,” he said.
