Video game spending in the United States slightly rose for May, per the latest data from Circana. While the PlayStation 5 remained the best-selling console in unit and dollar sales, hardware spending dropped by 13 percent year-over-year to $172 million.

Xbox Series X/S spending dropped by 30 percent, according to executive director and analyst Mat Piscatella. The Nintendo Switch saw a much bigger drop, falling by 44 percent, which makes sense considering the Switch 2’s imminent launch. With the latter selling over 3.5 million in just four days, it should be interesting to see how it impacts overall hardware spending for June.

The PS5 is the only platform that saw an increase, with sales rising by three percent. The best-selling accessory was also Sony’s, namely the PS5 Dual Sense Wireless Controller in Midnight Black. The PlayStation 5 has shipped 77.8 million units worldwide as of March 31st, 2025. However, shipments dropped to 2.8 million for the quarter from 4.5 million in the same period last fiscal year.

May 2025 hardware spending fell 13% compared to a year ago, to $172 million. Nintendo Switch spending fell 44% year-on-year, with PS5 sales growing 3%. Xbox Series spending declined by 30% compared to May 2024.
