As part of its recent financial reports, Nintendo has confirmed that the top selling game for the Switch 2 has been the latest entry in its kart racing franchise – Mario Kart World. The company has confirmed that the game has sold 5.63 million copies so far. The figure is even more impressive considering its $80 price tag, as well as the fact that it was released relatively recently – back in June.

The company has confirmed that these sales figures take every way of buying the game into account, be it physical copies, digital copies, and even the copies that were bundled with the Switch 2 and priced at $499.99, making it the least expensive way for a buyer to get their hands on both the new console as well as the game itself. It is worth noting that this sales data only accounts for the first month of the console and game’s release, being accurate as of June 30, 2025.

Nintendo has also revealed sales details for the Nintendo Switch, where the previous version of Mario KartMario Kart 8 Deluxe – still dominates the charts. According to the company, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 68.86 million copies since it was released for the Switch. The title is followed by other Nintendo games, like Animal Crossing: New Horizons at 48.19 million units, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at 36.55 million units, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with 33.04 million units.

For an interesting history lesson, the company has also revealed that the Mario Kart franchise has dominated the sales charts for quite a few of its consoles. The Wii U, for instance, had Mario Kart 8 sitting in first place with 8.46 million copies sold. The handheld Nintendo 3DS, on the other hand, had Mario Kart 7 in first place with almost 19 million copies sold.

When Mario Kart World was first announced, it had generated quite a bit of controversy thanks to its $80 price tag. Back in June, former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida spoke about how the game was priced appropriately in his mind thanks to the amount of content it offered players.

Yoshida spoke about how gaming has traditionally been an incredibly affordable hobby since the industry as a whole had generally avoided price hikes that would have otherwise been expected due to inflation. With Mario Kart World, however, he also noted that the game offers enough content to keep players busy for several hours.

“When you look at the value that the amount of entertainment a good video game provides, like Mario Kart 8, so many people played hours and hours and hours right with just one purchase, or maybe you know some people paid for additional tracks.” said Yoshida. “So it’s really up to the game and people have to [judge] which game provides the entertainment that you want and see if it makes sense to pay the price on day one, or some games, you know, many games [the] price comes down when you wait as well.”
