PlayStation President – “PS3 entering a great period”, believes streaming games is not viable for HD gaming

Newly elected SCE president, Andrew House revealed a few things about Sony’s future plans during an interview with CVG. He believes that Sony has a huge advantage in emerging markets, mainly due to the fact that they’ve been able sell the PS2 in these markets.

He said that Sony knows how to migrate into the emerging markets better than their competitors due to their global reach from a distribution, infrastructure and marketing standpoint.

He also said that streaming games is not viable for HD gaming due to the bandwidth constraints in the developing markets. He also believes that the digital download market still isn’t that big for them to drop physical media, and he also stated some latency issues as an example.

“The scale of data involved and issues around latency do mean that, at least for now, the easiest consumer experience is from physical media.

“Although, having said that, we’re starting to see some growth in the number or proportion of our consumers that want to access their content via download. But I think it’s still pretty small.”

This is a small hint that Sony’s next console will feature some sort of physical media, and they won’t abandon it entirely any time soon. We may also see them offering better online services as House revealed that Sony is indeed exploring different business models like F2P.

He again mentioned that they are not going to talk about any future console plans at this stage, as the PS3 is still doing really well.

“PS2 was on the market longer before PS3 came out – it went from 2000 to 2007, a full seven years before we launched a new platform.

“We’re just entering into this great period for PS3 – I don’t think we’re contemplating talking about anything to do with future console iterations at this point.”
