Sony Santa Monica was about to develop a Twisted Metal-based survival horror game instead of God of War

A world without Kratos? Kill me now.

God of War is one of the most successful and iconic franchises in the gaming industry these days, and it’s hard to imagine what the hack-n-slash genre would have been like had it not been for Kratos’ incredible adventures. However, before Sony Santa Monica started development on the first God of War game, they were about to go with a survival horror game set in the dark universe of Twisted Metal and develop that instead.

David Jaffe revealed this on the Weekend Confirmed podcast, though he did not elaborate.

“I love the world of Twisted Metal,” he said. “In fact, before we green lit God Of War we were in discussions at Sony Santa Monica about this cross between Silent Hill and Twisted Metal.

“Basically it was going to be a Silent Hill style game set inside the Twisted Metal universe, and so it was going to delve a lot more into that world which I think is really cool.”

In the podcast, he also jokingly said he wants Sony to make a Twisted Metal movie and release it on PSN. “I want to convince someone at Sony to give us a million dollars to go ahead and make a slasher movie with Sweet Tooth. We’d make it really low budget, really violent and really hardcore. And, y’know, we’d launch it on the PSN exclusively and then eventually we could put it out on Blu-ray.”

A world without God of War? I feel like crying just thinking about it. But that Twisted Metal movie does sound like a good idea, even if it’s a joke.
