RUMOUR: Retro Studios working on Star Fox reboot for Wii U

Come on, Retro- do a barrel role.

It’s been long rumoured that Retro Studios, popular for awesome rebooting the Metroid and Donkey Kong Country franchises and for their awesome work on Mario Kart 7, are working on something big for the Wii U. Miyamoto has already said that a collaboration between Zelda and Retro Studios is unlike to happen in the foreseeable future. According to recent reports, the new game that Retro is working on is a reboot of the popular franchise, Star Fox.

The next issue of the Official Nintendo Magazine (via My Nintendo News), has done a retrospective article on the Texas based game developers, titled “A Brief History Of Retro Studios’. The article ends as it talks about Retro’s next project, and ends with these lines:

“While some suggest this new project is likely to be a return to the Metroid franchise, we’d love to see another Nintendo hero get the retro stamp of excellence. After all, having rolled out the barrels for Donkey Kong, perhaps it’s time Retro pulled off a barrel roll of a different kind.”

Does this mean that ONM is privy to some information on Retro’s next project that we don’t yet have access to? We sure hope so, ‘coz this sounds awesome.

“Do a barrel role”, as we all know, is a famous catchphrase from the Star Fox games. This could possibly mean that Retro is working on a new Star Fox game. They are, after all, experts on bringing franchises back from the dead, and there was recently a Star Fox release (re-release, actually), on the 3DS, so this is quiet conceivable. If it does happen, it would be the franchise’s return to the Nintendo home consoles after a long hiatus, appearing last on the Gamecube.
