Order of the Sinking Star

Thekla’s Order of the Sinking Star, an epic puzzle title from Braid creator Jonathan Blow, will launch on October 8th for PS5, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. A new trailer is available, highlighting the different locations players will travel to and the over 1000 puzzles they must solve.

Of course, it also mentions that the title has been ten years in the making, which Blow says wouldn’t have happened “without the incredible designers who helped work on it.”

“By creating a kind of game design supercollider, we were able to bring together ideas from some of the most brilliant puzzle designers in the industry. I’m grateful to everyone who contributed to help us push the limits of what’s possible in a puzzle adventure. We can’t wait for players to step into this world and discover just how deep and complex it really is.

Order of the Sinking Star showcases design contributions from Alan Hazelden (Skipping Stones to Lonely Holmes, Mirror Isles), Sean Barrett (Promesst), Jonah Ostroff (Heroes of Sokoban), Zach Polansky (Enigmash), Patrick Traynor (Patrick’s Parabox), Marc ten Bosch (Miegakure), and several others—including design contributions from Twitch followers over the years.”

Blow also announced a livestream today on his Twitch channel at 10 AM PT to celebrate the release date. He’ll also answer any questions about the title, which is available to wishlist now across all storefronts.

Order of the Sinking Star is a puzzle title that sees players exploring four different worlds: Hearty Heroes of Hauling, The Promise, The Mirror Isles and Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes. Each features unique characters and gameplay mechanics, such as the Heroes and their different traversal abilities as they try to foil a conspiracy.

Eventually, the characters of one world will interact with another, resulting in unique combinations of game mechanics. Of course, beneath all this is a deeper mystery surrounding the titular cult, the Order of the Sinking Star, whose purpose connects everything.

We’ll find out how deep the rabbit hole goes in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, you can check out the free demo on PC. It features over 100 puzzles and a look at five of the playable Hearty Heroes of Hauling. Progress also carries over to the game’s launch.
