The fact that Grand Theft Auto 6’s physical release won’t include a disc in the box has sparked larger discourse around the nature of physical game releases, especially with Sony also planning to stop production of discs for new PlayStation titles from 2028 onwards. The latest subject of this discourse is the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.

Independent North American game retailer and distributor Video Game Plus has revealed that Modern Warfare 4 on the Switch 2 won’t even include a Game Key Card. Rather, it provides a code that must be redeemed through the eShop to access the game.

“The future of physical gaming should concern every physical game fan… GTA 6 – PS5/Xbox Series X/S, Diablo 4 – Nintendo Switch 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 – Nintendo Switch 2. All code-in-box releases.” The distributor noted that it won’t carry the physical releases of these games. “We believe physical games should actually be physical games.”

It is worth noting that Diablo 4 is allegedly in development for the Switch 2. Rumors indicate an imminent gameplay showcase and a September release date, during Gamescom later this week. The title is expected to cost $69.99, though details about whether it will include the Vessel of Hatred or Lord of Hatred expansions have not yet been revealed.

Nintendo offers a compromise for publishers that might want to release games on the Switch 2 that take up more storage than a typical cartridge – Game Key Cards. The system has been designed so that the card itself acts as a license to download and play the game, which is otherwise unplayable without it. This card could also be traded or sold.

As for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, the Nintendo Switch 2 version is slated for release on the same date as the PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S versions – October 23rd. The title recently wrapped up the first run of its multiplayer beta; the second run is slated to kick off on August 28th before ending on September 1st, and is open to all players.

Ahead of the beta’s kickoff, developer Infinity Ward released a trailer showcasing multiplayer gameplay from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 across a variety of maps and game modes. On launch, the shooter will feature 12 6v6 maps and a host of game modes, including the brand-new Kill Block. Ground War will also be available for those who prefer larger-scale battles.
