After reporting that 2019’s Resident Evil 2 had sold 19.7 million copies as of June 30th, Capcom has announced that the acclaimed remake has had over 20 million players since launch. That easily reaffirms its spot as the publisher’s second best-selling title ahead of Monster Hunter Rise and just behind Monster Hunter World.
Of course, Resident Evil 2 is available on Game Pass, which could have inflated the numbers (and may be why Capcom said “players” instead of sales). Regardless, it could cross 20 million sales by the end of the year because of its consistent pace alongside 2023’s Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 7: biohazard, Resident Evil Village, and of course, Resident Evil Requiem.
There’s also the recently announced Nintendo Switch 2 version, which could bolster sales figures even more. However you want to look at it, the remake has been an incredible success for Capcom and the industry as a whole, showcasing the sales viability of big-budget remakes. Except if you’re Dead Space, apparently.
Resident Evil Veronica continues this strategy, launching in 2027 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. It crossed two million wishlists last month, though a release date is still pending. With Capcom Spotlight coming up next week and Tokyo Game Show following shortly, it feels like we’re due for some new information. Stay tuned in the meantime.
