Nintendo is all set to kickstart the next generation when its Wii U launches later this year, and it is going to have no competition from either Sony or Microsoft, both of whom are still sitting pretty atop their current generation systems. Or well, that’s what we used to think, anyway.
As per this Gamespot report, sources close to The Wall Street Journal indicate that Sony is preparing to hit a 2013 release date for the Playstation 4. It considered making the PS4 a digital only system, similar to its PSP Go handheld, but ultimately (wisely) decided against it, considering the general standard of internet infrastructure the world over.
The report is lacking in any more details: we don’t know how powerful the system is, for instance, nor whether it still uses the Cell architecture- Sony has widely been speculated to ditch the Cell for favor of an easier system architecture for developers, but such a move would probably result in PS4 not being backwards compatible with PS3.
Sony declined to comment on the matter at all, with its stock ‘we don’t comment on rumors and speculation’ response. We’ll keep you posted if and when anything more happens. Hopefully, there’ll be something at this E3.
