Rare Looking At Goldeneye for Kinect?

Fans of the original Goldeneye 007 title for the N64 got a pleasant surprise this E3, when Nintendo announced that Activision would be releasing a remake of the beloved classic exclusively for the Wii. This especially made for big news when one considered how all partiers involved in the legal tussle around the original game, including Nintendo, Rare, Microsoft and Activision, had stated repeatedly that such a game was unlikely.

For those of you who wanted a Goldeneye remake, but not on the Wii for whatever reason, there’s some hope: Rare exec Rick Burton has stated that the company is looking at a Goldeneye type game for the Kinect.

Whereas this last might effectively cancel any excitement such an announcement would otherwise have had created, it would make Microsoft’s case stronger, as the Kinect has thus far had nothing but a deluge of casual titles, all of which wouldn’t look out of place on the Wii, announced for it so far. A developer like Rare developing a title for the motion tracking peripheral might make developers take the accessory seriously.

Speaking about such a project appearing ever on the Kinect, Burton said, “For us, until you start on that product, it’s difficult to say what we’re going to do.

“We got so excited about Kinect. There’s something in there… What we’ve seen with Kinect is that it’s just the first wave.

“There are so many possibilities for those kind of things,” he added, returning to the question. “But I’m not going to tell you what they are. You’ve got so many inputs, why would you not use those for any experience?”

That sounds like nothing conclusive, to be honest. But it opens up an even more interesting question: is a proper, complex, layered game possible on the Kinect at all? Could Rare be working on it now, even as we speak?
