A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead Dev Diary Details Intense Stealth Gameplay

Lead game designer Manuel Moavero reveals details on the core mechanics that will form the spine of Stormind Games' upcoming horror title.

Upcoming horror title A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead will see players trying to navigate a post-apocalyptic Earth while trying to avoid the attention of blind yet deadly aliens who hunt through their keen hearing. That, of course, will mean an emphasis on stealth gameplay, which developer Stormind Games and publisher Saber Interactive have offered fresh details on with a new developer diary.

The video sees lead game designer Manuel Moavero starting off with briefly discussing some of A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead’s more conventional stealth mechanics, like being able to hide in bushes or even in cardboard boxes, before turning attention to what will form the backbone of the experience- doing your best to remain as silent as possible, so you don’t attract the attention of the terrifying extraterrestrial monstrosities. 

The game will hand players several tools for those purposes, like a flashlight, which will enable you to better spot and identify objects that could prove a threat to you, from glass that you could step on to a trap just waiting to be sprung.

You’ll also have a phonometer, which will not only measure how much ambient sound is being made around you, but also how much sound you’re making. So if, for instance, you’re in a place where there’s loud ambient sound of, say, rushing water, you can safely make noise yourself, without fear of attracting unwanted attention. 

The Road Ahead will challenge players to find objects in the environment and use it to their advantage, like throwing a glass bottle to create distractions, or pouring sand in front of yourself as you walk so your footsteps are less noisy, and more. Check out the video below for more details. 

A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead is due out on October 17 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
