Super Mario RPG was released in 1996 and the game was quite a success, but ever since the game was released, audiences from around the world were clamoring for years for a sequel to the game. But since the license belonged to square soft and not to Nintendo, two straight RPG-themed spiritual sequels followed: the Paper Mario series and the Mario & Luigi series. Both of these sequels were a follow up to Super Mario RPG.
