In Super Mario cover art box, Mario is dying
What many people fail to notice in the box art of Mario Bros 2 is that Mario is falling to his demise. In the particular arrangement of jumping, stone wall and lava can really only be seen when Mario is falling to his death in a lava pit. So the box art, rather than showing children their hero victoriously leaping through the air, shows Mario’s descent to his death. I think it was probably the first time that a cover box art shows the main character of a video game about to die.
