Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Exists Because Edward Kenway is One of Ubisoft’s “Crown Jewels”

It looks like we're not the only lot who have a special place in our hearts for Kenway and his journey to becoming an Assassin.

An interview with Game Informer has shed light on just how much respect Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag commands within Ubisoft’s ranks, with Resynced’s creative director, Paul Fu, and Anvil Engine expert Nicolas Lopez speaking about how it was a logical choice for the studio’s first stab at remaking one of its older titles.

For Fu, his love for Edward Kenway has played a major role, and he had nothing but praise for the former pirate turned Assassin and the journey that got him there.

“I think he’s just special. He’s almost like a brand within a brand; he’s one of the crown jewels of Ubisoft, in my opinion, and he has a really, really good story. It’s funny, it’s dark, it’s melancholic at times, and it’s just moving.”

We’re quite in agreement with the part about Edward’s story being moving, and we’re humming “Parting Glass”  to ourselves as we write this. Lopez looks beyond Kenway to the Caribbean and the opportunities it presents to showcase how the Anvil Engine has evolved since it brought ancient Japan to life in Shadows. He was also emphatic about how the studio’s experience with naval combat in both Skull and Bones and Assassin’s Creed 3 shaped the decision to go forward with Resynced.

“…for us as a studio, Ubisoft Singapore not only has a history of working on water tech through Anvil, we have a history with naval gameplay and stuff, so when you put all those things together, it’s like, ‘Yeah, why not take a stab at it with Black Flag?… [it] was the perfect opportunity to consolidate and push this even further.”

It’s quite clear that Black Flag remains special to both its makers and its fans, and with Resynced doing away with its modern storyline to better focus on Edward, along with new endgame missions against a pirate hunter, it looks like the man who rose above himself for the Order is all set to charm us once again come July.
