Ubisoft’s upcoming film adaptation of Assassin’s Creed is in an interesting position. It features a strong cast with the likes of Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard plus the studio itself is working to ensure that it lives up to the legacy of the video games. In fact, brand head of content Azaizi Aymar is confident that the Assassin’s Creed film could break the streak of terrible video game based films.
Responding on Twitter to the statement that “movies based on video games have and never will work,” Aymar believes it’s very much like comic book movies. “Nope we can’t. There is always a first, like comic book adaptation. Assassin’s Creed will be that one, mark my words pal!”
It’s not the worst analogy. Once upon a time we were lamenting superhero films like Steel, Batman & Robin, Catwoman and Spiderman. Lo and behold, there are more superhero films than ever and a good number of them are quite entertaining.
Can Assassin’s Creed have the same kind of impact on films? We’ll find out once it releases in December.
