“Enemies will not be kind to you.”
Assassin’s Creed: Origins promises to be a reimagining of the long-running Ubisoft series, and what we’ve been able to glean from all the information and footage of the game we’ve seen so far is that Origins is looking to overhaul a great deal of systems that have been, let’s say, stagnant in the series for a long time. One of those systems is combat.
During the game’s E3 Coliseum panel, the game’s director Ashraf Ismail talked a great deal about the combat system and how it differs from what we’ve seen in the series before. The most notable change is that the combat is no longer based on pre-set animations, but on hit boxes, meaning that if you swing a weapon and there’s nothing in your weapon’s path, all you will hit is air. While that may sound like a small thing, it’s a first for the series and actually promises to change up the combat a great deal. This also means that different kinds of weapons will play differently- long weapons like spears and short ones like swords will have different play styles. In fact, status conditions, like being knocked down to the ground, or being stunned, or having your shield broken, will also have a major part to play.
Ismail also confirmed that the game’s combat will allow players to play three kinds of ways- as an archer who uses long range bows and weapons; as a warrior who’s fighting style is more direct; and then there’s the stealth option. And if Ismail is to be believed, all three combat styles are going to be equally well-developed in the game.
What’s more, it seems one of the primary complaints with all Assassin’s Creed games has been addressed. Enemies will now no longer wait for their turns to attack you and there will be times when they will come at you all at once. “Enemies will not be kind to you,” Ishmail said.
Well, definitely sounds interesting. Assassin’s Creed games’ combat system has been in desperate need of reinvention for some time now, even after the improvements we saw in Syndicate. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for more updates on Assassin’s Creed: Origins.
