Assassin’s Creed Shadows is Similar in Scale to Assassin’s Creed Origins, Says Creative Director

Though it's around the "same size as Origins," Ubisoft wanted to have a "much closer to real-life scale ratio" with Shadows.

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows looks like a big game, especially since it’s the next mainline open-world title in the franchise, but how does it compare to previous entries? Speaking to IGN, creative director Jonathan Dumont said it’s similar in scale to 2017’s Assassin’s Creed Origins.

“It’s in line with the latest Assassin’s Creeds that we’ve done. On a scale level, maybe we can compare it a little bit more to the size of Assassin’s Creed Origins.” However, there’s a greater focus on “real-life scale ratio” and authenticity.

“We did want to have a much closer to real-life scale ratio. So because castles took a lot of space, and we really wanted the mountains to feel like mountains, [we’ve made] the environments feel wider in the game. But I would say around the same size as Origins.”

Considering some complaints about how Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Valhalla could feel too big and bloated, this is probably good news for modern fans. Also, remember that Assassin’s Creed Origins takes about 30 hours to finish its story and a whopping 85 hours for a completionist run on average per HowLongToBeat, so Shadows is still poised to be a massive experience.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows launches on November 15th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC. It features two playable characters, Naoe and Yasuke, with options to recruit other allies, create a spy network and even customize a hideout. Head here for details on its various editions.
