Astral Chain is looking like another fun action romp from PlatinumGames. One of the central aspects of the game is that you have a Legion, an interdimensional being, attached to your being that you use in various ways in combat. It even can make for some makeshift co-op, if you’ve got the guts to tackle the game that way. Interestingly, the Legion feature was a little different in early versions of the game.

Things shift and change in development all the time. We even know that in the early stages Astral Chain was a fantasy title instead of a cyberpunk infused sci-fi one. Another aspect that was different was the Legion. While in the final game, you have five different Legions, originally there were a lot more.

Animator Marumi Nakajo posted about it on the company’s blog, offering some early artwork of various ideas that you can see below. They discussed over a dozen Legion ideas. In the end, however, the team decided to streamline it the few Legions in the final game. You can also see how they reused some of the designs and ideas for the current Legions and enemies in the game.

You may not have dozens of Legions, but Astral Chain still promises some wild gameplay when it launches on Nintendo Switch August 30th.
