Though the indie space has been dominated by excellent metroidvania releases this past decade, to this day, 2015’s excellent Metroid-inspired Axiom Verge remains one of the best recent metroidvania titles. A wait for a sequel has been long and insufferable, but finally, at Nintendo’s recent Indie World presentation, a sequel was indeed announced.

Axiom Verge 2 will feature new characters, new abilities, and of course, new mechanics to go along with all that, but details are currently pretty thin. The announcement trailer was pretty short, preceded by a message from developer Thomas Happ. The trailer proudly displayed the pixel art style that fans of the first game will immediately recognize, with plenty of quite diverse environments, while we also got a few interesting glimpses at traversal and combat. Take a look below.

Axiom Verge 2 is due out some time in Fall 2020. Obviously, we know that it will be launching for the Nintendo Switch, but whether or not other systems are also part of the game’s launch plans isn’t something that’s been confirmed yet.
