Gearbox have blended genres effortlessly again with Battleborn, their newest project which mixes shooters and MOBAs. Apparently, the experiment has been a hit, at least with the audiences, if not necessarily with the critics- speaking on Twitch, creative director Randy Varnel discussed the game’s launch, describing it as being ‘pretty good.’
“Ultimately Borderlands [was an] extremely successful new game for us, and even Borderlands 1 went on to sell, I think, almost 7, 8 million units in its lifetime,” he said. “Battleborn is actually tracking just ahead of where Borderlands was on the sales, and we think it’s going to be a game that is going to work like that. A decent, solid launch. We’re seeing steady and growing user counts on all three platforms, and hoping that word of mouth is going to take us even further.”
Battleborn already seems to be doing well for itself, then- it debuted at number 1 in the UK charts, and it appears as though interest in the game is generally high. It will be interesting to see whether the new game can command the kind of long term interest that Borderlands did.
