Battlefield Studios might be keeping details of the battle royale mode it has planned for Battlefield 6 close to its chest, but some details are popping up thanks to leaks and rumours here and there. According to ModernWarzone, the game mode will be making its debut in Battlefield 6 under the name Battlefield: RedSec.

The new name for the battle royale mode also means that Battlefield Studios might be leaving the Firestorm mode behind. Firestorm had made its debut as part of Battlefield 5 all the way back in 2019.

Reports have also indicated that Battlefield Studios might want the release of Battlefield: RedSec to be a surprise. No trailers or official announcements are planned for the game mode. Rather, the plan seems to be to shadowdrop the game mode as part of the major update coming to Battlefield 6 with the start of Season 1 on October 28. Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson has also corroborated the shadowdrop plans on social media.

“I can now independently verify that Battlefield 6 Battle Royale is indeed planned to shadowdrop on October 28th,” wrote Henderson. When asked whether there was any actual reason behind shadowdropping the game mode, Henderson noted that the main person leading the decision is Byron Beede, who has also previously helped with the shadowdrop launch of Call of Duty: Warzone.

“Byron Beede is leading the charge I believe and he was a key figure for Warzone’s shadowdrop strategy, so I imagine he is just replicating everything,” he wrote.

Battlefield Studios has previously noted that it had been testing the battle royale mode through its Battlefield Labs playtests. While the playtests may have been put on hiatus for the time being with the developers focusing on the launch of season 1, details about the game mode were revealed just last week.

The developers had noted that quite a bit of feedback had been taken from Battlefield Labs playtesters for the battle royale mode. Among the changes that will be coming to the game mode include how close-range time-to-kill values work, changes to starting armour, and improvements to the world design and vehicle balance. Along with this, Battlefield Studios had also revealed details about the kinds of changes that players can expect when the update bringing Season 1 to Battlefield 6 drops on October 28.

Battlefield Studios had also released a launch trailer for Season 1 of Battlefield 6 earlier this month, highlighting some of the new content that will be coming to the title over the three-month season. The first month will see the release of a new game mode – Strikepoint – along with new map Blackwell Fields. This phase of content will be dubbed Rogue Ops. The second month, dubbed California Resistance, will introduce the Eastwood map along with another game mode – Sabotage.

Battlefield 6 is available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Sales of its PC release has been described as being “among the best seen for a premium game” in the US. For more details, check out our review. Also check out our thoughts on everything that is wrong with the shooter.
