Bleeding Edge is a multiplayer team brawler developed by Ninja Theory and published by Xbox Game Studios.
Bleeding Edge was leaked days prior to its official launch in early June of 2019, before being formally unveiled at Microsoft’s E3 press event shortly afterward. It was also confirmed alongside its announcement that a technical alpha test of the game would go live later that month, something that had also been leaked before. Further alpha testing of the game was done in October.
In November, a prematurely uploaded listing for the game on the Microsoft Store revealed that the game would launch in March 2020, and that it would also have two beta testing periods prior to that. Microsoft confirmed that the game would launch for Xbox One and PC on March 24, 2020, and that Xbox Game Pass subscribers and those who pre-ordered the game would get access to its playable beta.
Later in January 2020, Ninja Theory’s Rahni Tucker, creative director on Bleeding Edge, mentioned that the game being on Game Pass had also prompted the developers to approach certain design aspects differently. Due to the fact that many players would be trying out the game even if they were not familiar with the genre, Ninja Theory decided to implement better tutorialization to ease new players in.
Though Bleeding Edge is designed as a multiplayer-centric title, Tucker expressed an interest in single player content as well, saying that though the team was focused on multiplayer, which would remain their top priority, there was potential in the setting for “plenty of interesting stories to tell with the characters” through single player content.
Shortly before its release, it was confirmed that Bleeding Edge would have no microtransactions at launch, and other than a select few pre-order bonuses, everything in the game could be earned through in-game actions. Ninja Theory also revealed that Bleeding Edge had been developed by a very small development team, which had 15 people in it on average, and only ever went up to a maximum of 25 people.
Given Bleeding Edge’s nature as a multiplayer-only title, it does not place much emphasis on storytelling. It is set in the future, in the year 2057, where the world is run by corrupt governments and powerful corporate organizations. A New Yorker named Daemon loses his mother because of an incident involving such corrupt corporations, and vowing revenge, decides to fight back against the establishments. He forms a gang called Bleeding Edge, comprised of of augmented fighters, and intends to recruit more members through underworld fighting rings.
Bleeding Edge is a multiplayer brawler that pits two teams of four players each against each other, with the focus being on eliminating opposing team members and working toward and completing objectives. Players can choose from twelve different characters, each of whom has their own unique attributes, strengths, weaknesses, and play style.
While most characters are designed primarily around melee combat, some characters also have ranged abilities. Characters are categorized across three different classes: damage, support, and tank. Abilities are also split across three categorizations, namely Basic Abilities, Special Abilities, and Supers. Bleeding Edge is confirmed to be launching with twelve characters, of whom eleven have been revealed and detailed by Ninja Theory so far.
Players can swap between characters mid-game immediately after respawning. The confirmed characters are as follows:
Bleeding Edge has various game modes, including a Dojo where players can train against AI-controlled opponents. Another mode is Control, in which the map has three objective locations, which activate in phases, with any number of locations being active during a phase. Teams are tasked with capturing or recapturing objective locations by standing in them. 1 point is rewarded for every second a player is in an objective location, and 10 points are rewarded for every kill. The first team to 600 points wins the game.
Another mode, Objective Control, is a variation of Control in which only one objective location is active at a time. Another mode, Power Collection, tasks players with collecting power cells and depositing them in specific locations, which are not active all the time, similar to Control and Objective Control.
Bleeding Edge’s maps have a variety of environmental hazards that players can use to their advantage, such as fire hazards, oncoming trains, electrified fences, and more that can be used as traps against enemy players. Characters traverse across maps using hoverboards. Bleeding Edge is confirmed to be launching with four multiplayer maps. These are Boneyard, Skygarden, Aqueducts, and Jersey Sink.
Progression in Bleeding Edge involves players earning two in-game currencies- namely, credits and spare parts. Credits are used to purchase cosmetic items, such as customizations for hoverboards and emotes, while spare parts are used to purchase weapon mods, with players being allowed to equip a total of three weapon mods at a time.
