Borderlands: The Handsome Collection is out on March 26th and is already gathering rave reviews for its updated visuals, the collection of all DLC released till now and four player split-screen support. However, there’s still that first game that isn’t on current gen consoles. But it could happen if The Handsome Collection is a success according to Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford on Major Nelson’s recent podcast.
“The fact that The Handsome Collection has Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Borderlands 2 means there’s still that original game that isn’t on next-gen yet. If this is successful, I’m sure the folks at 2K, the people that care about publishing and figure out how to get content in customers’ hands if customers want it, will be noticing that. And I’d love to have those conversations about how to bring Borderlands 1 to next-gen.”
The main obstacle that arises is from the original using a different engine from the sequel and The Pre-Sequel. That means there will be “some work involved” but Gearbox could find a way to overcome the same. “If [The Handsome Collection] is successful enough, there might be a way to justify that. And I really hope that’s the case. I’d love to have my entire Borderlands collection on next-gen.”
