Cairn On the Trail

Developer The Game Bakers has announced that its free expansion for mountain-climbing game CairnOn the Trail – is coming to PC (via Steam, GOG and Epic Games Store) and PS5 on August 13th. The announcement was made with a trailer that clocks in at less than a minute in length and gives us a quick look at the various new environments that we will get to explore.

On the Trail is slated to be the start of a series of major content updates for Cairn, with the first one introducing three new areas to climb as the player sets off to follow in the footsteps of a “legendary climber”. The update will also allow players to climb over water. If you happen to miss your footing and fall off the mountain you’re climbing, the water under you means that you won’t instantly die.

The update is also bringing in a new playable climber, Marco, who has his own goals of trying to conquer Mount Kami. Cairn players will recognize Marco as protagonist Aava’s agent, who often happens to be quite overzealous.

Cairn was released on PC and PS5 back in January, and since then has seen quite a bit of positive response from players and critics alike. The title puts you in the shoes of a mountain climber, with the core gameplay mechanics revolving heavily around simulating an actual mountain climbing experience. This means that, among other things, you will have to make sure that you have the right equipment and also choose the right paths on your way up the mountain, since missing even a single ledge will lead to failure.
