Publisher:  Activision

Developer:  Sledgehammer Games

Platforms:  PS4, PC, Xbox One

Genre:  First Person Shooter

Release Date:  November 3, 2017

Call of Duty: WW2 is the fourteenth entry in the Call of Duty series from Activision, and the second entry from newcomers to the shooter’s growing stable of studios, Sledgehammer Games. Just as the rest of the series, Call of Duty: WW2 is a First Person Shooter with a campaign, but the primary focus is on multiplayer. Following something of a return to form for the series, Call of Duty: WW2 aimed to return to the “boots on the ground” roots of the series and the World War 2 conflict the series last visited in 2008 with Call of Duty: World at War. The game released on  November 3rd, 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One family systems, as well as Windows PC.

Development

While the launch of a new Call of Duty game came as a surprise to literally nobody, the plans for the return to World War 2 were teased as far back as the release of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare in 2014. In an interview with Michael Condrey, co-founder of Sledgehammer games was asked about where Call of Duty could possibly go to from there in terms of setting, Condrey alluded to the return to World War 2, citing some of his favourite pieces of media such as Band of Brothers, and how a return to the worst conflict in history with modern technology would be interesting.

During development, Sledgehammer Games kept their cards close to their chest in terms of how the game would freshly approach subject matter of the war. In a later interview with Mashable, Senior creative director Bret Robbins shared that they would, for the first time in the series, tackle the true horrors of the war. Robbins went on to speak about how they wanted to tell a authentic story, and that required diving into the subject matter, and that games audiences wanted that nuance.

Raven Software was brought in to help with the PC port, and stated that their first focus was Windows and the needs of that community. To that end, several long requested changes like the removal of controller aim assist and an additional sensitivity slider for aim-down-sights was added to this version.

Story

The story of 19-year-old Texas boy, Ronald ‘Red’ Daniels, and his part in the 1st infantry division headlines what Activision insists is that real, authentic story they aimed to tell about the horrors of the holocaust and the war surrounding it. The story takes the player through the boots of Daniels on a ride through some of the most famous battles of the war, like ever-present D-Day, the Battle of Hurtgen Forest, and the Battle of the Bulge.

Sledgehammer wanted to focus on the larger theming of the greater good and the vulnerability of the kids who were going to war for the first time, instead of trying to honour any personal stories from the war. Fictionalizing such an important conflict in our history wasn’t the idea, so Sledgehammer understood they had to take a different approach to tone, not shying away from the atrocities and tragedy of the times, but also approaching women’s rights and race segregation as well.

Gameplay

Call of Duty: WW2 is going to be very familiar to fans of shooters over the last decade, but there are a few concepts both new and old that are going to switch things up for players. Health packs make a return in the campaign, as the one and only way to restore your health, helping create some extra tension in combat. Your squad mates play an important mechanical role in the campaign too, meant to help drive your connection with them, one might help replenish ammo while another would heal you or yet another could call in artillery.

For the multiplayer, things are more or less how you would expect them to be. The largest addition is the Headquarters, which functions somewhat like a lobby where the social aspects of the community can shine, and bring a new signifigance to events like prestiging, where you can now celebrate the accomplishment with friends.

Divisions is a new feature to multiplayer, allowing an additional layer of customization to multiplayer outside of the class and load out options Airborne is different from Infantry is different from other divisions and can help solidify your particular play style. Gun attachments, perks and kill streaks are all still a factor, just polished significantly from the last time Call of Duty was in this setting. War Mode makes a triumphant return from World at War, bringing an objective based mode to Call of Duty that feels similar to contemporary influences like Overwatch, pitting two teams against each other in objective based combat.

Characters

Sledgehammer games put a surprising amount of work into the characterization of the 1st infantry division and Daniels’s band of brothers. Of course Ronald ‘Red’ Daniels is the player character and of the most note. From Longview, Texas, Daniels wishes to live up to his brother’s legacy, who died of a wolf attack in his early life.

He’s joined by his friend Robert Zussman, American Chicago born private, who can give the player health packs. Photographer Drew Stiles (nickname College) acompanies them and can replenish Daniels’ grenades, and finally Queens born Technician Fifth Grade Frand Aiello who can assist with artillery support. The squad is led by an arrogant Sgt. William Pierson, and Lt. Joseph Turner who can provide ammunition when the player runs low.

The story doesn’t limit itself just to the squad however, and you’ll run across other key players in the effort to liberate Europe. Rousso is a woman with the French resistance who plays a key part in the story, and is briefly playable during a stealth mission, before returning to controlling Daniels.

In-Game Economy

Call of Duty WW2 Loot Crate

Despite the negative trend towards loot boxes, Call of Duty: WW2 sure adds them anyways. ‘Supply drops’ have been introduced to the multiplayer, the current consensus says they did pretty well balancing them into the game.

The contents of Call of Duty: WW2’s loot boxes focus mainly on cosmetics, including apparel, gun skins, callsigns and emotes. Players can earn a drop without spending money if they happen to receive them as a random reward following a match or complete timed challenges, either daily, or weekly, to earn armoury credits. To encourage players to interact with the new Headquarters mode, they can also be earned through watching other players open their supply drops. XP multipliers can occasionally pop up in the loot boxes, but still actually mean the player has to play those matches and win to really reap the rewards.

In the returning Nazi Zombies mode, the loot boxes can contain consumable power ups such as one-shot stopping power against each monster. It’s not a competitive mode, so the unbalance that would come from mass purchasing in this mode isn’t as destructive.
