Cloud Saves May Not Be Available for All Switch Games

Nintendo is finally bringing some form of save management to the Nintendo Switch with their Nintendo Switch Online service, which will allow subscribers to backup their saves to the cloud. However, fine print of the website advertising the feature confirms that it will not be available for all Switch games.

Now, this is just a disclaimer that we can expect to be in place thanks to the existence of products like demos, as well as media apps, that are likely to not allow cloud backups. We can also presume that games like Animal Crossing and Pokemon, which would be seriously undermined by so-called “save scumming” (a player could back their game up to the cloud, trade a Pokemon away, then restore their save, so that they never lost that Pokemon) will presumably not be compatible with the functionality either.

Still, hopefully, the feature is compatible with more games than it is not- Switch seriously needs more secure save file management.
